‘Shut Eye’ Season 1 News & Update: TV Series Defies Physics In A ‘Breaking Bad’ Way [Spoilers]

“Shut Eye” is the new drama in Hulu that defies physics by focusing on a community composed of fortune-tellers. Set in Los Angeles, Charlie Haverford, portrayed by Jeffrey Donovan who has a client that packages cocaine.

Yes, drugs and murder seem to two of the show’s similarities with “Breaking Bad.” It dwells in a violent Los Angeles where a fake psychic eventually had psychic abilities. Thanks to a head injury, he now sees the future.

It’s still early to tell, though, but it can be that Charlie’s just experiencing an effect of the accident. He could just be trying to cope with his personal issues, specifically his relationship with Fonzo (Angus Sampson).

Fonzo is a mob that runs the community of fortune-tellers. With this, Linda (KaDee Strickland) tries to convince Charlie to go behind Fargo’s back to create a bigger exploitation plot.

Just like any violent society, “Shut Eye” also operates with subplots that often leads the viewers to a complicated ending or the lack of it. Aside from this, The Atlantic adds that what it lacks is precision and ability to surpass the main character’s personal crisis.

Aside from this, there are also a lot of negative social implications and stereotyping. For one, the Italians are set as stereotypically fighting against the Americans. Also, A.V. Club adds that the Rom are also poorly represented as hucksters.

Apparently, “Shut Eye” copes up with these stereotypical representations of these groups by presenting a communal gathering in its third episode. Nonetheless, as the first season progresses, overarching stories are created to create a more compelling story for Charlie and his wife.

Overall, there’s nothing new in “Shut Eye” that viewer haven’t seen in other shows. With this, the success of the first season will still be held off as the remaining episodes will air on Hulu on Dec. 7.
