Netflix released the first season of "The OA" on Friday, Dec. 16, with little promotion and noise. But as some subscribers have finished binge-watching all of its eight episodes over the weekend, there has been a nagging question about its renewal for Season 2.
The streaming site won't likely make an announcement about the renewal this soon, given that the series has just been out on the platform and it's still gaining an audience. But because of the ambiguous ending to the first season of "The OA," Netflix subscribers can't help but wonder if they will get more answers with a second season.
Vulture breaks down the nitty-gritty of the "freaky" ending of "The OA," which has likely left viewers "overwhelmed, bereft and confused." But the site is only one interpretation of where the story concluded, which is why a potential Season 2 could tie-up lose ends or bring closure.
According to Bustle, "The OA" has to prove it's a valuable series before it could earn a second season renewal. But chances are that it might have already been doing that because it's been constantly compared to "Stranger Things," which hit Netflix in July and became one of 2016's most successful series.
"The OA" creators Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling -- who actually plays the OA on the show -- discussed the direction of the show via Entertainment Weekly. Batmanglij said that as writers, they believe they have closed the first season of "The OA" properly.
"So whether or not they believe the story is true, the boys are changed by the experience and so is she," he said. "So in that sense, everything about the core emotional storyline between the strange woman and group of boys resolves itself in the end."
Whether that statement hints of the show being done as a one-off series is just as ambiguous as the ending of "The OA." What is clear is that the creators are master storytellers who have impacted and involved its viewers in a way no other Netflix show has done.
"The OA" delves on near-death experiences and features characters who have the ability to open up a portal to a different dimension using special movements. The show also stars Jason Isaacs (Hep), Patrick Gibson (Steve), Emory Cohen (Homer), Paz Vega (Renata) and Riz Ahmed (Elias).
