Since 2017 was relatively filled with a bit of good news during the CES 2017, it is another story for PlayStation Live Events Viewer app subscribers. Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced that they will be discontinuing the app starting January 10.
Since the PlayStation Live Events Viewer app was only released in North America, only PS3 and PS4 users in the country are affected. The announcement was sent via mail to PSN users, according to GameSpot.
PlayStation® Live Events Team announcement reads: "As a valued customer of Live Events Viewer we wanted you to know that starting January 10th you'll be able to purchase the latest and greatest Live Events, directly from PlayStation®Store on PS4TM! From January 10th, be sure to visit PlayStation® Store on PS4TM for a new and improved Live Events experience."
The reason behind Sony cancelling the app is that the company wants PS4 owners to purchase the access to live events from the PlayStation Store starting Jan. 10. This means that the use of the app is no longer needed. DualShockers reports that once the live events are purchased, it will be available in the "My Videos" area of the PS Store. Sony also promises that every week, new programming will be made available.
However, for PS3 users, this is bad news and they are the ones greatly affected by this sudden retirement of the PlayStation Live Events Viewer app as there is not replacement service for the older console. The only option for them is to purchase a PlayStation 4 and then purchase the access to Sony's live events. PS3 users will have to truly say goodbye to viewing live events.
Sony launched the PlayStation Live Events Viewer app in 2013 for PS3. The following year, it was made available for PS4. Sony's app allowed PSN owners to watch entertainment, sports, music, and other programming on-demand, both pay-per-view and free.
