"Aquaman" will not debut in theaters until 2018, but there's hype already building up around the Jason Momoa-starrer from DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. James Wan, whose most notable films are in the horror genre, revealed that he will inject some scary elements in "Aquaman" as well.
In this year's Comic-Con, Wan didn't hide his excitement over being the one chosen to helm "Aquaman." According to the filmmaker, he feels delighted to be the movie's director because Aquaman/Arthur Curry hasn't been portrayed in a feature film until now, SlashFilm reported.
'Aquaman' Movie Brings The World Of Atlantis To Life
Wan also teased about what viewers should expect to see from the "Aquaman" movie. "The opportunity to explore this universe and bring a bit of my horror element to this, the deep sea, the scary world, and of course the wondrous world of Atlantis," he shared, as quoted by SlashFilm.
Momoa, who first gained recognition for his "Game of Thrones" stint as Khal Drogo, will play the half-human, half-Atlantean King of the Seven Seas in "Aquaman." The actor's portrayal of the DC Comics superhero was showcased in the teaser trailer for "Justice League" revealed at Comic-Con 2016. Aquaman was also shown briefly in this summer's "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice."
'Aquaman' Storyline, Cast, And Crew
It was recently reported that Will Beall will solely write the script for "Aquaman," according to Variety. The script is based on a treatment by Wan and Geoff Johns.
In March, it was revealed that "Aquaman" and Ezra Miller's "The Flash" (to be released in March 2018) will not be origin stories. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal (via ComicBook.com), producer Charles Roven said that both movies will have standalone materials, but will pick up after the events of "Justice League" and focus on the respective superheroes' journeys.
Wan told Uproxx last month that he was asked by Warner Bros. to direct either "Aquaman" or "The Flash." He ultimately chose the former because he loves that "Aquaman" is "an underdog character" and the possibility of creating an "amazing, incredible, magical kingdom" was too compelling.
"Aquaman" will also star Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe as the superhero's romantic interest Mera and advisor Vulko, respectively.
A series of set photos was released in June showcasing Momoa in a green swimming pool while shooting scenes for "Batman v. Superman." Check them out below. "Aquaman" will bow in theaters on July 27, 2018.
